Naturschutzbund (NABU) Barleben e.V.

With currently 184 members, NABU Barleben e.V. is committed to nature conservation and sustainable living in Barleben and nearby villages of the Börde district. The focus of the activities includes maintaining and preserving meadow orchards and old fruit varieties, preserving and promoting biodiversity in meadows and pastures, maintaining and renaturalising bodies of water, and environmental education.

The Moordahlsee project

Supported by HUMAN, the project focuses on increasing biodiversity by converting arable land and intensive grassland into species-rich permanent grassland and creating a connection between two semi-natural old watercourses and the Ohre near Wolmirstedt.

Land is to be purchased to close gaps between the areas already owned by the NABU Foundation at the Moortalsee lake near Wolmirstedt (30 ha) and between these areas and the areas already leased (30 ha). Species-rich permanent grassland will then be gradually established on these contiguous areas between 2021 and 2030. In 2-3 years, this newly planted grassland will be transformed into a near-natural year-round permanent pasture where cattle, horses and buffalo will create rich and intricate grassland as a habitat for numerous insects, amphibians, and birds.

Why HUMAN supports this project:

HUMAN wants to support the increase in biodiversity by converting arable land and intensive grassland into species-rich permanent grassland in the immediate vicinity (Börde district) of the HUMAN site in Magdeburg.
