Kidney Failure Risk Factor: Urine Albumin-Creatinine Ratio

The urine albumin-creatinine ratio shows whether the urine contains albumin. Albumin is a type of protein that's normally found in the blood, but only in small amounts in the urine. If albumin is detectable in larger amounts in the urine, then this could be a sign of kidney damage. Larger amounts of albumin are often found in patients with diabetes and hypertension – and is a recognized risk factor for progression of kidney and cardiovascular disease. Parallel measurement of creatinine and albumin allows to correct the variations in diuresis, making collection of 24-hour urine samples obsolete.
